Veneers in Calgary: Costs, Process, and Whether They Are Right for You
Veneers are everywhere on Instagram, but the reality is more nuanced than the before-and-after photos suggest. Here is what they actually cost in Calgary, how the process works, and who they are (and are not) right for.
Ask ten people what veneers cost and you will get ten different answers, most of them wrong. Ask what the process actually involves and you will get even more confusion. This post is a straight answer to both questions, plus an honest look at whether veneers are the right choice for you.
What veneers actually are
A veneer is a thin shell — usually porcelain, sometimes composite — that is bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, colour, size, or alignment. Think of them as a permanent cosmetic overlay. They are not a fix for cavities or a replacement for orthodontics, though they can improve the appearance of minor crowding when full braces are not warranted.
Cost in Calgary
In Calgary, porcelain veneers typically range from $1,200 to $2,500 per tooth. Composite veneers, which are less durable but far more affordable, run $400 to $900 per tooth. Most people who get veneers do 6 to 10 teeth (the ones visible when you smile), so a full front-of-mouth case usually lands between $8,000 and $20,000 depending on materials, complexity, and the specific case.
Alberta does not have a set fee guide like some provinces, so prices vary. Be cautious of quotes that seem dramatically below this range — either the materials are cheaper, the process is being shortcut, or both. This is not a place to bargain hunt.
The process, step by step
A full veneer case typically takes two to three appointments over two to four weeks.
Consultation
We look at your teeth, take photos and x-rays, and talk through what you want to change. Sometimes we make a wax mock-up of the proposed result so you can see it before committing.
Preparation
A small amount of enamel — usually less than half a millimetre — is shaped from the front of each tooth to make room for the veneer. Impressions are taken, and temporary veneers are placed while the permanent ones are made.
Placement
Two to three weeks later, the permanent veneers are bonded to your teeth. Adjustments are made for bite and fit, and you leave with the final result.
Are you a good candidate?
Veneers work best when the underlying teeth are healthy and the bite is stable. If you have active gum disease, untreated decay, or significant grinding (bruxism), we treat those first — veneers on top of a shaky foundation will not last.
You are probably a good candidate if you want to address discolouration that whitening cannot fix, small chips or worn edges, minor spacing or shape issues, or teeth that look uneven. You may not be a good candidate if you have significant crowding (Invisalign or braces first), a heavy grinding habit that has not been addressed, or if you are hoping veneers will fix issues that are really about tooth alignment or jaw structure.
How long do they last?
Well-made porcelain veneers on a healthy mouth last 10 to 15 years on average, and often longer. Composite veneers typically last 5 to 7 years before they need touching up or replacing. In both cases, longevity depends heavily on how you care for them: no chewing ice, wearing a nightguard if you grind, and keeping up with regular hygiene visits.
The honest downside
Veneers are permanent. Once we remove that half-millimetre of enamel, it does not grow back. That means committing to veneers is committing to having veneers for the rest of your life — when the current ones wear out, they will need to be replaced. This is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to think carefully rather than deciding on a Tuesday afternoon.
